Grey Tuesday

Today is Grey Tuesday. Over 200 websites are hosting DJ Danger Mouse’s Grey Album. The Grey Album is a remix of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album. When Jay-Z released the The Black Album, he also released an acapella version to encourage DJs to create remixes of his work. And that’s what Mr. Danger Mouse did, using samples from The White Album. The end result turned out surprisingly good. So good that it created an enormous buzz online. The problem is he didn’t ask EMI, who owns the rights to The Beatles’ work, for permission to use the samples. Now EMI has sent cease and desist letters to all retailers and websites demanding they stop selling the album or remove the posting of mp3s online. Grey Tuesday is a protest towards all record labels that have stifled the release of legitimate recordings, such as The Grey Album. Learn more at greytuesday.org.
