"Love of mine, someday you will die…"
As dark as their name sounds, Death Cab for Cutie is not a band that lives up to their name. If anything, they sound more like a mellow Jimmy Eat World or like The Shins but a bit more up-tempo. The thing I really love about this band are their lyrics. They are very insightful, witty and give a whole new feeling to things sung about many times before. I’ve quoted them here before and I could quote them a million times more.
Their new album comes out next week and there’s more than a couple songs that I already love. One song in particular I really listened to on the drive home. It’s just guitar and vocals and I think that, along with the lyrics of course, and the subject matter make the song as good as it is. It’s a very hopeful way of looking at death or anything good that comes to an end.
“Love of mine some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind
I’ll follow you into the dark.
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white,
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark.
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no’s on their vacancy signs.
If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks,
Then I’ll follow you into the dark”
